GIOVANNI SOLLIMA | KATHRYN STOTT

Friday 7 February 2014
Giovanni Sollima Kathryn Stott

Cello soloists and cello ensembles worldwide all over the world are used to perform the music of Giovanni Sollima, who calls himself, rather than "composer", a "cellist who could not write if not for the cello". Not recognizing divisions between the musical genders, Sollima deals with pop, rock and jazz with the same respect that reserve to baroque music. His judgment of a music piece is expressed quite in a primordial and physical way: it is simply a matter of deciding whether the music can be " tattooed " on the cello or not.
At the Fazioli Concert Hall, Sollima appears next to the celebrated British pianist Kathryn Stott who, working on several fronts, not least a solo career and the enhancement of contemporary composers, has made of chamber music a critical chapter of her life. Acclaimed and requested for his eloquent and extrovert musical personality, she boasts several famous collaborations, as well as 35 years of activity in duet with the great cellist Yo- Yo Ma.

« He has no fear, and that's unusual in the classical world - we're all terrified of wrong notes. »

Yo-Yo Ma, Philadelfia Inquirer

« (K. Stott) she plays wonderfully, allowing her music fluidity
and space; her virtuoso outpourings are formidable. »
