The Kaleidoscopic Charm of Paris
By Luca Cossettini

Awarded by the Polish government for his contribution to the dissemination of Chopin’s music, Dang Thai Son is among the most refined and influential figures in international piano. Born in Vietnam and trained at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, he rose to global prominence in 1980 as the first Asian artist to win First Prize at the X Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Since then, he has performed in over forty countries, in legendary halls such as New York’s Lincoln Center, Paris’s Salle Pleyel, Vienna’s Musikverein, and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall. A sought-after juror and teacher, he teaches at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio and the New England Conservatory in Boston, and is an honorary professor at the Conservatories of Beijing and Shanghai. His discography—with recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, CBS Sony, and the Chopin Institute—demonstrates profound musical intelligence, capturing every nuance of the Romantic repertoire with rigour and intensity.

A genuine musician.
