Rather than a traditional piano concert, Piano Solo pays homage to the art of improvisation. When Stefano Bollani steps onto the stage for his one-man show, anything can happen. There is no set list, no programme to hold onto and follow. The audience is swept away on an adventure that changes every night, a breathless journey to musical horizons that only seem distant.
His performance can pass from Bach to the Beatles, and from Stravinsky to the rhythms of Brazil, with ad-lib forays into Italian classics from the ‘40s. This is a genuine musical stream of consciousness, where laughter and emotion blend into one.
Only one thing is certain, at the end of the concert it is the audience who choose the encore. Bollani diligently notes down and performs requests on the spot: an unpredictable medley displaying a blend of virtuoso talent and irreverence.
… he could do anything... He has what we refer to as talent, but not only in the musical sense. He is also rather cultured (actually very cultured), yet modest about it. He likes many different types of music and he plays them all well. He is a great jazz pianist, but also a great classical pianist. He knows how to sing, even though he doesn't have the voice for it. When he had the chance of a show on TV, he did something truly original, so interesting that he never did it again...
